The Las Vegas Raiders signed a new general counsel earlier this month, joining other division rivals, the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers, to shake up their domestic legal ranks. The Cincinnati Bengals also hired the first in-house lawyer in their history this year after losing in the Super Bowl. Finally, the Houston Texans quietly parted ways with former legal and administrative director H. Suzanne “Suzie” Thomas earlier this year, shortly before trading controversial former star quarterback Deshaun Watson to the Cleveland Browns. Watson accepted in August an 11-game suspension imposed by the NFL for sexual misconduct filed against him by numerous women. He joined the NFL`s legal department in 1997 to focus on the league`s collective bargaining agreement, including issues such as complaints about player and club contracts and injuries, performance issues, and salary cap disputes. As Senior Vice President of Labor Policy and NFL League Affairs, he oversaw the development, administration and enforcement of the league`s core policies on substance abuse, performance-enhancing drugs, gambling and criminal misconduct. During his time in the NFL, he worked with federal, state, and local officials on key league issues such as youth shock laws, the league`s tax status, and the FCC`s prohibition rule. Previously, he also led programs to support the success of players and staff off the field, with a focus on continuing education, financial education, career development and clinical support. Texas media did not respond to requests for comment on Thomas` departure. She was the team`s top lawyer for a decade and has been working for the McNair family — owners of the Texans — since 2000.

Gregory Kondritz, the Texans` general counsel since 2019, was also promoted to executive vice president of commercial affairs last January. Daniel Werly, a veteran sports lawyer with experience in various fields in the field, has been named general counsel for the Tennessee Titans. Mr. Werly, whose first day was June 8, replaces Burke Nihill, who has been named President and CEO. The New Orleans Saints have hired former Adams and Reese partner Gregory Roussell as senior vice president of human resources and legal counsel, according to the team`s website. Rouchell joined GMB Management LLC, an affiliate of Saints owner Gayle Benson, earlier this year after representing the Saints on a variety of matters, including at least two lawsuits filed in U.S. federal court, according to Bloomberg Law data. Rouchell did not respond to a request for comment. The Tennessee Titans of the National Football League have hired former lacrosse star Bryce Wasserman as their attorney. Bloomberg Law reported last month that the Buffalo Bills were without the services of their longtime chief counsel, Gregg Brandon, when the team began the 2022 NFL season. The Bills have since appointed assistant counsel Kathryn D`Angelo as acting general counsel, according to the team`s website. D`Angelo, a former prosecutor, was hired by the Bills in 2016.

Wasserman now trains for the Titans, reporting to team general counsel Daniel Werly and deputy general counsel Valeria Williams. Burke Nihill, former general counsel of the Titans, was named president and CEO of the team in 2020, the same year the franchise hired Adolpho Birch III as its new general counsel. Werly, who is also an associate professor of sports law at Vanderbilt University School of Law, left the GC position at the Nashville Soccer Club to join the Titans across town. Previously, he was Managing Partner of Sievert Werly, a sports law firm, with Justin Sievert. Prior to this role, Werly was an attorney at Foley & Lardner and Drinker Biddle & Reath. An internship with the Titans last summer led him to his current job after his active days ended, Wasserman said. His brother Casey, a former lacrosse player, also works for the team. They have nothing to do with sports industry mogul Casey Wasserman. Nihill, who is in his fifth season with the team, replaced Steve Underwood, who retired a month earlier. Are you sure you don`t want a free professional evaluation of your resume? Prior to joining the NFL, Birch worked in Houston, Texas, first at Fulbright & Jaworski and then at a labor, insurance defense and municipal finance firm. Prior to joining the firm, he clerked for Justice Thomas A. Wiseman Jr.

He is actively involved in a number of professional and philanthropic organizations, including the Sports Lawyers Association, Partnership for Clean Competition and the National Bar Association. In October 2010, he was named one of the Top 100 Leaders of the African-American Community by The Root, a media collaboration between scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and The Washington Post. By agreeing to submit your resume, you agree (in accordance with our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy): Wasserman, who graduated from law school in May and passed the Tennessee Bar exam in July, officially joined the Titans last month. The all-time leading lacrosse scorer in Monmouth University history was named Major League Lacrosse MVP two years ago while attending the University of Miami School of Law. Wasserman isn`t the only lawyer to have recently joined an NFL team.

Birch was elected to Vanderbilt`s Board of Directors in 2014 and currently chairs an ad hoc committee formed to recommend equality, diversity and inclusion policies. Birch was a Patricia Roberts Harris Fellow at Vanderbilt Law, where he served on the editorial board of the Vanderbilt Law Review and received his J.D. in 1991. He studied at Harvard University. “My lacrosse days were an incredible experience, and I was very fortunate to play at a professional level for five years while getting my MBA and JD,” Wasserman said in an email. “But I had an even better experience transitioning to my professional career in the NFL.” Titan`s majority owner, Amy Adams Strunk, said. (This story and dozens of others can be found in Professional Sports and the Law, a publication of Hackney Publications. Subscriptions cost $295 per year.) His appointment was announced by the Titans organization on June 25. Wasserman broke his hand in the finals and played for the Boston Cannons, who won the MLL championship by beating the Denver Outlaws to end a pandemic-shortened 2020 season. The win was especially sweet for Wasserman, who was drafted by the Outlaws in 2018 after graduating from Monmouth University in New Jersey. In addition to his work as a professor of sports law, he is also co-chair of the ABA Department of Sports.
